Thinking of getting higher for better conditions we took an early start on Ben Nevis yesterday only to get a bit lazy and decide to try a route on the Douglas Boulder. To be fair we had good intentions and took a ‘careful’ walk under Vanishing with the intention of scouting a suitable route on the way upto Secondary Pinnacle of the Tower. The whole point of the last few days was to explore a few areas neither of us had been before however for us the snow became a little worrying as we passed underneath Fat Boy Slim  and Italian Climb. In hind sight we should have walked back toward the CIC before heading back up into the Ciste for the colder weather, in reality we stood underneath the Boulder and got psyched about NW Face Route. We encountered every unhelpful kind of snow imaginable and after a pitch of ‘climbing’ felt we were destroying part of the mountain with the amount of gardening and digging needed to try and be safe.

Our route takes the central, diagonal chimney right to left. Bottom right - the rocks are not exactly frozen in place!

After an abseil retreat with tails between legs we bumped into Scott and Scott making their way around the corries with enormous smiles which left me thinking ‘why cant I be happy on things less vertical!?’ Answer lies here maybe??…………

A bit of a tactical change in mountain ranges means we are now in Aviemore drinking coffee and waiting for stormy weather to pass. Its not that we didn’t try however, the doors were nearly taken clean off the van this morning up at the ski centre which put a stop to plans again. Maybe tomorrow will dawn a little calmer?
