It was Liam, Allan and Stewart’s final day of their Winter Mountaineering course with Abacus Mountain Guides, so I wanted to test their new found skills and climb something slightly more challenging. With a snowy forecast we made a beeline for Ben Nevis and No.2 Gully which has some great climbing, excellent rock belays all in an atmospheric surrounding. It snowed all the way into the Coire only for the skies to clear just as the guys were getting geared up. It wasn’t long before more teams arrived including Max with his two happy climbers, everyone worked around eachother which was another good lesson for Liam, Allan and Stewart as they were unsure of the protocol on busy routes.
The guys swung leads up four pitches before Stewart took us over the lip, which has a very small cornice, before bringing Liam and Allan up into a full on winter blizzard. We decided to make a quick escape down the path before stopping to gaze at amazing skies on the final walk out. Always nice to see people progress over just a few days in the mountains, hopefully I will see these guys out in the hills again putting all their skills to the test for themselves.
