This morning I met Louis for the start of his five day mountaineering course with Abacus Mountain Guides. Louis has plenty of indoor bouldering under his belt but only recently started winter walking and climbing. Having never stood ontop of Ben Nevis I thought Ledge Route would be a good way to start the week, and with a promising forecast it delivered in style.
On our way towards No.5 Gully we took time to observe recent avalanche activity and dig around in the snowpack a little. There were a few patches of avoidable windslab on the approach but we made the bottom of the initial slab without problem before donning the rope and moving together throughout the route. There were quite a few teams behind us but for such a nice day it certainly wasn’t busy. Aside from a few crusty areas of snow the remaining pack is solid and well consolidated, there is a great trail up Ledge Route and the crux step down is very well built up and easy to manage, even for someone short like me!
