After a pure soaking yesterday Louis needed a slightly more relaxing day. This morning we took time to look at the contents of a winter pack and compare differences between summer and winter climbing equipment. We discussed the importance of efficiency and organisation whilst in the winter hills and touched on emergency procedures should something untoward happen.
Louis had been climbing in Glen Nevis before, but today I wanted to use it as a classroom and get him to think a little more about multi-pitch stances with the influences of winter in mind. Lots of discussion around anchors, tying in, using guide plates, hanging stances and taking lap coils. All done on reasonably dry rock and under a period of blue sky’s before getting a battering in a vicious snow flurry.
I returned home to reports of more human triggered avalanches in the local area, stay safe out there and remember the avalanche forecast is just that – a forecast.
