Plenty of snow has fallen overnight and settling down to around 600 meters making everything feel much more like February rather than the start of June! Dave joined me today looking to learn some mountaineering skills and just go experience some Scottish winter delights. The original plan of the Aonach Eagach went out the window instead hedging my bets on Ben Nevis. The plan was to stay out of the considerable avalanche areas above 900m and head for Castle Ridge which was to be Dave’s first proper winter climbing experience. I haven’t been on this route in winter for about three years but remember its quality and just how steep it is for grade III. Ken was just ahead of us out guiding a happy customer who also seemed to be enjoying the exposure on the steep crux high on the route.

The rescue team were out with helicopter in assistance, seemingly attending an avalanche which had injured some climbers. I don’t know the full details so wont speculate on the events. Stay safe out there with so much snow about.
