I’ve spent the last two days with James introducing him to winter walking and all the technical equipment it that goes with it. Yesterday we used Aonach Mor to get to grips with crampons, using an ice axe and movement whilst continually evaluating conditions and interpreting the avalanche forecast. We finished yesterday with a wander over to the summit where we were treated to amazing views towards Ben Nevis and the Grey Corries.
Today was another stunning day in the Highlands, quite windy at times which gave it a real winter feel; a welcome feeling after all the mild weather. We went on a great journey over Stob Coire nan Lochan and Bidean Nam Bian before dropping into the Lost Valley completing a satisfying circuit. A journey such as this allows plenty of time to consolidate new skills and experience winter walking whilst under the watchful eye of an instructor. James learnt fast and will no doubt use his new found skills to enjoy many winter days in the Scottish hills.
