The Aonach Eagach; Glencoe

The Aonach Eagach is possibly the most famous ridge challenge in mainland Britain. Dominating the skyline as you travel through Glencoe it is hard not to notice the outstanding ‘Notched Ridge’ towering above the road. It is a substantial challenge covering some 10km, two Munros and a good dose of exposed scrambling thrown in for good measure. Your qualified guide will be experienced and knowledgeable, having completed the traverse in a wide variety of conditions allowing you to trust their judgement and provide you with a truly memorable experience.

Join one of our set dates below to traverse the Aonach Eagach with like minded people. Alternatively you can book a days private guiding.

Thanks so much for yesterday Steve. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to Skye!-

S.Penn, Aonach Eagach

The day ahead

P1010942The typical itinerary begins with a steep walk up the South East Spur of Am Bodach. Once standing on this Munro top the real scale of the challenge is laid out before you with truly amazing views along the ridge and out towards Loch Leven and the Ballachulish Bridge. The initial challenge of descending a short steep chimney sets the mood for the day, afterwhich only a few exposed sections lead to the summit of your  first Munro – Meall Dearg. The ground between the two Munros is what the Aonach Eagach is famous for: exposed but amenable scrambling up short chimneys, along picturesque arêtes and around the formidable ‘Crazy Pinnacles’ before basking in the glory atop the second and final Munro, Sgorr nam Fiannaidh.

The descent from the Aonach Eagach gets a fearsome reputation and rightly so given that taking the wrong turn can lead you into very steep and potentially dangerous ground. Having spent the day with your guide they will be able to assess the best and most enjoyable way for you and your partners to safely descend.P1020478

Equipment

AEAs a guided ascent you will be provided with harness and helmets for the day free of charge. If you are new to this type of technical equipment your guide will cover everything you need to know and ensure it is worn in the correct manner.

It is common for people to traverse the whole ridge without the use of ropes and specialist equipment; you may even encounter others running along with nothing but trainers and a windproof for company.  It is not that we don’t trust you but it is in all our interests to keep eachother safe whilst travelling over exposed and occasionally friable ground. Expect your guide to carry a short length or rope which may or may not be deployed along the traverse, they will assess the parties experience and prevailing weather conditions and use the rope if and when they see fit, it is afterall our job to make your day as safe and as much fun as possible.

Fitness

Completing the Aonach Eagach ridge is most certainly achievable for the competent and confident hillwalker however; it is not a scramble to be underestimated. Yes it is certainly physically demanding but more so mentally draining as you have to concentrate whilst tackling technical ground. Expect to be out on the hill between 7 – 10 hours and ascend approximately around 1200m over the course of the day, let’s not forget getting all the way back down again either!

Ratios

A traverse of the Aonach Eagach is typically ran on 1 guide to every 3 clients. For group bookings of more than 3 people please get in touch.
