Happy having ascended Tower Ridge; Ben Nevis

Happy having ascended Tower Ridge; Ben Nevis

Hill walkers and climbers alike know of Tower Ridge, it has been the scene of many epic tales the majority of which culminate around the crux of the route; Tower Gap, which guards the way to the summit of Ben Nevis. It should be better known as one of Scotland’s prize mountaineering routes, one of the longest in the United Kingdom and the centrepiece of the spectacular North Face. In our opinion Tower Ridge is the best way to achieve the summit of The Ben.

During the summer months it is challenging but never overly difficult and can be achieved by fit hill walkers who crave some exposure and scrambling during their missions into the mountains. Your qualified guide on Tower Ridge will be experienced and knowledgeable, having made numerous ascents in a wide variety of conditions allowing you to trust their judgement and provide you with a truly memorable experience.

I booked Steve, Vertical Fever, to climb Ben Nevis by Tower Ridge & what a day! I have never been challenged as much as I was that day & Steve made it all possible.

The day ahead

The typical itinerary begins from the North Face carpark at Torlundy. Conditions and group ambitions will dictate whether you start walking from here or drive to a slightly higher carpark. Once over the style the excellent path winds its way gradually towards the North Face of Ben Nevis with spectacular views in every direction. The first land mark to be reached is the CIC Hut, a small alpine style lodge that nestles beneath Ben Nevis. Following a short stop here to fill up water bottles the route then ascends towards the Douglas Boulder and onto Tower Ridge itself. Your guide will discuss and assess which is the best way to start the ridge given the weather conditions on the day. Some short pitches of graded climbing (Diff) will be tackled on the Douglas Gap and Towers which give the ridge its name, but expect to be moving as a team for a large portion of the day soaking up the extraordinary scenery and learning from your guide along the way. Soon after crossing The Eastern Traverse and Tower Gap a short walk is all that stands between you and the highest point in the UK.

There are many ways to descend from the summit including but not limited to Ledge Route, Carn Mor Dearg Arete, Coire Leis and the Ben Nevis Mountain path. Having spent the day with your guide they will be able to assess the best and most enjoyable way for you and your partner to safely descend.

Fitness

Climbing up Tower Ridge is achievable for the fit and confident hill walker however; it is not a scramble to be underestimated. Your ascent starts very close to sea level which means allot of ascent combined with steeper sections of climbing and let’s not forget getting back down again either! If you are not a regular hill walker a good level of cardio fitness, some general upper body strength and bags of enthusiasm  will enable an ascent of Tower Ridge. Expect to be out on the hill between 7 – 10 hours.

Ratios

An ascent of Tower Ridge is typically ran on 1 guide to every 2 people but 3 people can be guided at the same time via a Private Guiding request.

Meeting and timings

Generally speaking you will meet your guide at 0830 at the North Face Carpark near Torlundy which is signposted just off the A82 between Fort William and Spean Bridge. As the day of your ascent approaches your guide will be in contact to discuss any final arrangements and discuss the prevailing weather forecast for your chosen day.
